Moonprint Solutions is a product development and manufacturing company that serves NASA, DoD, and commercial customers.  We design, analyze, test, and fabricate innovative softgoods products to address the needs of our customers.  Softgoods products typically use engineered materials including fabrics, films, laminates & composites. Our softgoods design work includes the design and development of novel hardware interface solutions, structures, and test fixtures.  Examples of products we have developed include ultra-lightweight life rafts for the US Coast Guard, large tensioned-fabric sunshades to protect US Navy munitions assembly areas, flexible gloveboxes for use on the International Space Station, and dust covers that protect robots working on the lunar surface.  Our products push the limits of materials and technology to perform in highly challenging environments. Our core technologies are widely applicable to a range of markets, contributing to our long-term sustainability.

Job Summary: 

Our interns become a part of the team on day 1 and quickly become integrated into our programs and activities.  Our interns help develop product and technology solutions to meet customer needs.  Through collaboration with our team and our customers, our interns help generate designs, identify materials, support prototyping activities, and test our products.  The environment is highly dynamic, and our personnel are often working on several projects concurrently.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Generate concepts for component and system designs and perform trade studies
  • Design and develop products, using a combination of softgoods (films, textiles, coated fabrics, et.), metal and composite materials
  • Generate 2D and 3D CAD models (Draftsight, Solidworks)
  • Perform structural analysis to ensure designs meet static and dynamic performance requirements (manual calculations, SolidWorks Simulation, etc.)
  • Perform materials and subcomponent research and selection
  • Generate component & assembly drawings
  • Generate test reports, and participate in technical presentations to customers
  • Plan and execute validation tests to ensure design specifications are met and to assess the suitability of fabrication technologies & approach

 Qualifications: 

  • Must be a U.S. Citizen
  • Mechanical Engineering rising senior preferred
  • Proficient with CAD software (SolidWorks, AutoCAD/DraftSight) 
  • Proficient with MS Office software 
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Good written and oral communications skills
  • The ability to plan and lead technical activities
  • The ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines

Moonprint will provide a salary commensurate with the applicant’s experience (between $17.00 and $25/hr – NASA currently pays $18.25/hr for summer internships).  Part of the intern’s salary will come from the Delaware Space Grant Consortium and will be provided directly by the University of Delaware, the manager of the Space Grant.  Moonprint also has many intangible benefits associated with our work environment that support strong mental health, a sustainable environment, and personal & professional growth.
